Crondall Road is a country lane linking the A287 with The Street which carries heavy rush-hour traffic that has steadily increased due to the many housing developments that have been built in the general area without corresponding improvements to traffic infrastructure. As a result, residents of Crondall Road have become increasingly concerned at the volume and speed of traffic and the lack of off-road pedestrian routes.
The Parish Council sought remedial action through Hampshire County Council Highways Department which, after extensive public consultation, resulted in a trial traffic-calming scheme being installed, after 2 years gestation, during mid-2010. Unfortunately, the various elements of the calming proved to be counter-productive to road safety and compromised access to some properties adjacent to build-outs . The result was that the temporary elements were removed some months later.
Despite this set-back CVPC, working with the Crondall Road Action Group (CRAG), continued to seek ways in which the traffic issues could be alleviated. As a result, a further calming scheme was developed, drawing on experience gained during the earlier trial, which culminated in a new, permanent set of calming measures being installed, together with adjustments to speed limits on the southern approach to the village, in early 2015. At the same time, a section of footway was built between the car park at Crookham (Chequers) Wharf on the canal to The Exchequer public house.
The Parish Council continues to explore options for further sections of footway between The Exchequer and The Street to separate pedestrians from the heavy traffic and will monitor experience with the new calming measures to determine their effectiveness and safety.
